uss-new-orleansThe U.S. Navy has awarded BAE Systems a potential $51.5 million contract to perform repair and maintenance work on the USS New Orleans amphibious transport dock ship.

BAE said Thursday it will repair the USS New Orleans’ structural, tank, ventilation and auxiliary systems as well as preserve crew habitability systems and spaces of the vessel at the company’s dry dock facility in San Diego, California.

The contract has a base value of $36.7 million and work will commence in January 2017.

“We made the strategic investment to meet the ship repair needs of the Navy,” said Joe Campbell, vice president and general manager of BAE Systems’ ship repair business.

Campbell added the company aims to boost the San Diego industrial base’s capacity to repair warships through the contract.

Bob Koerber, vice president and general manager of BAE Systems’ San Diego ship repair business, said the company will apply its experience from previous work on the USS New Orleans to help the service branch modernize the transport dock ship.
