The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has partnered with Orbital ATK to explore the concept of combined cycle engine technology.

Orbital ATK said Tuesday it will examine the possibility of integrating turbine and hypersonic engine technologies into an aircraft propulsion system through DARPA’s Advanced Full Range Engine program.

The company aims to help the agency develop a new propulsion system that would operate from traditional runway low-speed takeoff to hypersonic flight and then return to a conventional landing speed.

The company has multiple hypersonic test facilities in the East Coast region.

Orbital ATK also currently develops rocket pulse motors designed to operate at extremely low temperatures and for defense and tactical missions.
