Matt Mulherin, former president of Huntington Ingalls IndustriesNewport News Shipbuilding division, has received a 2018 Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Award from Navy League of the U.S.

HII said Monday Mulherin has supported multiple ship construction and maintenance efforts, such as the U.S. Navy‘s Nimitz-class aircraft carrier program, during his 36-year career.

“Very few shipbuilders can say that they have been a part of eight aircraft carrier deliveries,” said HII President and CEO Mike Petters.

“Matt’s enduring commitment to our company and Navy partners, combined with his leadership and work ethic, leave quite a legacy.”

Mulherin also served as an HII executive vice president and led the company’s NNS business as president from 2011 through his retirement in July 2017.

He accepted the award at the Navy League’s Sea-Air-Space banquet that was held Monday at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Maryland.
