Lockheed Martin CEO Marillyn Hewson has announced that the company will hire new apprentices and fund vocational and trade programs meant to boost workforce in the aerospace and defense industries.

The Bethesda, Ma.-based firm said Thursday it will provide 8,000 openings for internships and programs for rotation, mid-career development and technical apprenticeships.

Lockheed will also invest $5 million in vocational and trade initiatives as part of its tax reform savings plan, which provides $50 million for science, technology, engineering and math scholarships and $100 million for more training opportunities for employees.

The effort comes after President Trump signed an executive order that calls for the formation of a council to drive vocational worker training programs.

Hewson, a four-time Wash100 recipient, noted that Lockheed will help train workers for modern operations as the U.S. aerospace and defense sectors are still short on skilled manufacturing workers.
