‘It is about being part of the community where key decisions are being made,’ says Wes Bush

One of the major factors in the decision to move Northrop Grumman’s headquarters to the D.C. area is to be closer to where “key decisions” are made, according to Wes Bush, CEO and President.

In a recent article in the Washington Post, Bush sat down with Capital Business to discuss Northrop Grumman’s decision to move to Northern Virginia along with some of the projected growth areas in contracting.

“As we thought about our corporate office and our ability to serve our customer, it became very clear we needed to be here,” Bush said. “This is where our customer base is headquartered. This is where the key decisions are made that influence the things we care the most about.”

One of the reasons for choosing Northern Virginia was the location as well as economic incentives.

“Virginia stacked up very well. We are down to a small number of sites in the Falls Church and Arlington area,” Bush said. “Those sites have the proximity we were looking for; all are within the Beltway. They meet our economic objectives as well as our economic incentive structure from the state and local governments.”

Also, while Bush did not have exact figures, he confirmed that the move would be accompanied by job opportunities in the area as well. Additionally, Northrop will look to become more involved in the community, particularly in education, in an effort to help develop future leaders in science and technology.

In terms of future growth areas for contracting, Bush sees several areas with increased investments.

“If you look at the areas of increasing investments, it is unmanned systems, cybersecurity and communications, surveillance, reconnaissance and intelligence,” he said. “We’re a leader in unmanned systems. And we’re well positioned in cybersecurity. We’re not a Johnny-come-lately. We see tremendous opportunity in that.”
