Senior DHS cybersecurity official Bruce McConnell: Current security approach like ‘Whac-A-Mole’
November 11th, 2009 by JD KathuriaSenior DHS cybersecurity official Bruce McConnell recently compared current US computer security response to the game “Whac-A-Mole.” “A threat pops up here, we whack it down, and another one comes up here – this is the environment that many of your enterprise cybersecurity officers are facing,” said McConnell, as quoted by FCW’s Ben Bain at a recent gathering for information technology vendors. “We can’t continue to play Whac-A-Mole; we’ve got to move forward and have a fundamentally more secure [cyber] ecosystem,” he added.
McConnell isn’t the first to use the Whac-A-Mole analogy. Booz Allen’s Mark Herman has done the same. Check out our interview with him this past summer — he offers tips to get beyond the current status quo on the cybersecurity front.
