After a long, anticipated wait, it finally arrived: Details of the White House’s cyber security plans. Calling efforts to prevent cyber attacks one of national priority, President Barack Obama today stated he would appoint a cyber czar to implement a five-point initiative for strengthening the country’s cyber security infrastructure. At the same time, Obama offered assurance that such efforts would not be accompanied by routine monitoring on the part of the federal government of private sector networks.

Still left to be seen is who will be appointed cyber czar — and when. Obama offered no such specifics in Friday’s talk. Nor, as the New York Times reports, did he make mention of continued turf battles among the Pentagon, NSA, and the Homeland Security Department about which agency should take the cyber lead.
