Cybersecurity Experts: Government's Role in Cybersecurity Needs Expansion

Experts from across industry and academia told a house subcommittee today that the government’s role in cybersecurity research, development, and education needs to be expanded and improved.

Cybersecurity experts told the House Science and Technology Committee's Research and Science Education Subcommittee that government-funded cybersecurity R&D programs and interface with the private sector with respect to those projects should be enhanced. They added that formal, public cybersecurity education programs should be bolstered.

Obama said May 29 his administration’s new plan for cybersecurity would “promote cybersecurity awareness and digital literacy from our boardrooms to our classrooms” to “build a digital workforce for the 21st century.“

Meanwhile, last month the House also passed legislation designed to expand research and development efforts in high-performance computing.

Seymour Goodman, a professor of international affairs and computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology, said people who use IT are now responsible for much of cyber defense, but the proliferation of technology has greatly increased our risk. Goodman said he fears a “a coming tsunami of insecurity“ arising from proliferation of mobile devices like new cell phones with increased computing power.

He added, “Industry and government need to get together and they need to get together… with the mandate that they come up with greater security in cyberspace. It's as simple as that.“
