On Thursday, Janet Napolitano announced DHS has been authorized to hire up to 1,000 cybersecurity professionals.
The remarks came at the kick off meeting for National Cyber Security Awareness Month. The new hires will be distributed throughout DHS as Napolitano looks to make the department a premier center for cybersecurity knowledge.
Napolitano told the audience she is looking to bring in the new personnel within a maximum of three years, ideally less. When asked about where the new hires would be drawn from, Napolitano said they would be drawn primarily from the private sector.
Chris Painter, acting senior director for cybersecurity at the White House, told the audience the search for the new “cyber czar” is still ongoing, and assured listeners that even without a “cyber czar,” the White House was still moving forward in its effort to better protect the digital infrastructure.
