DOD Supports Open Source Software

The deputy CIO at DOD, David Wennergren, has announced the DOD’s support for open source software. The DOD presently uses a few open source software products, but these are presently limited.

In his memo, Wennergren said “To effectively achieve its missions, the Department of Defense must develop and update its software-based capabilities faster than ever, to anticipate new threats and respond to continuously changing requirements. The use of open source software can provide advantages in this regard.” Some of the benefits of open source software highlighted by Wennergren include security and reliability, lower cost and the ability to modify coding to meet specific missions. Open source software has been encouraged for federal government use by Vivek Kundra in recent months.
