One letter is the difference between a safe domain and one of the most risky domains. McAfee Security has listed Cameroon domain .cm as one of the world riskiest domain names (see map below produced by McAfee).
McAfee, after assessing 27 million sites, released a study showing that half of the websites with a .cm domain name are involved in “shady” activity.
Researchers sight the small distinction between the .cm and .com domain names as the main reason for the high number of illegal activity centered around Cameroon’s internet infrastructure. Many malware hosting .cm sites are versions of popular .com sites with high traffic.
This attack known as typo-squatting is not new; just particularly successful with the similarity between the .cm and .com domain names.
The boom in cyber crime in Cameroon is not new; however, last year when McAfee completed the same study Cameroon’s websites were not charted or studied.
