Australia Opens Center for Cyber War - top government contractors - best government contracting eventThe Australian Department of Defense has opened a new center for cyber security in Canberra. The center will be staffed over 50 existing staff from the Defence Signals Directorate (DSD) and will also include representatives from Australian intelligence (ASIO), the Australian federal police and the Attorney General’s Office.

The center is supposed to eventually be staff by as many as 130 cyber professionals within the next five years. Defence Minister John Faulkner said “cyber intrusions on government, critical infrastructure and other information networks [were] a real threat to Australia’s national security and national interests. Already we have evidence of sophisticated cyber intrusions onto networks in Australia, both government and private.”

He also said that the Internet can serve as a useful tool but also a medium to conduct warfare. The opening of the center is part of the National Cyber Security Initiative developed by the Australian government. Part of the initiative includes the establishment of an Australian version of CERT.
