Last week, The New New Internet reported on the hacking attacks against Human Rights Activists in Iran by members of the Revolutionary Guards. Today, at a speaking engagement at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, Ahmad Batebi, of Human Rights Activists in Iran, and Joe Stork, of Human Rights Watch, spoke out against the crackdown, which included cyber attacks against human rights websites and arrests of human rights activists and other members of the opposition.
Specifically, the Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRA) were targeted, which effectively closed down their capacity to report and publicize human rights abuses by the Iranian government. At the time, the state run media claimed that the arrests and cyber attacks were launched against a “U.S. backed cyber network.”
Keyvan Rafiee, HRA founder and director, said “These fabricated accusations are the most recent tactic of the Iranian government’s multifaceted attack on Iran’s human rights defenders. Iran is increasingly desperate as it faces international scrutiny for its systematic human rights violations.”
