US Cyber Challenge Announces Security Treasure Hunt to ID Cyber Pros - top government contractors - best government contracting eventIn an effort to help identify the next generation of cybersecurity professionals, U.S. Cyber Challenge has partnered with the California Office of Information Security and Cal Poly Pomona to launch an online competition. The 2010 Security Treasure Hunt began yesterday and will end on May 30.

Currently, many cybersecurity experts bemoan the dearth of skilled cyber professionals.

“It is critical to be able to meet the immediate needs of the nation in the area of cyber skills,“ said Karen Evans, nationwide director of USCC. “We are excited to see the launch of this effort and partnering with the states in this effort.“

A central goal of online cyber games is to find younger, tech savvy individuals who can serve as the basis for building a more skilled cybersecurity team. The students are often given scholarships along with opportunities for internships and mentoring.

“Identifying the next generation of talented and skilled cybersecurity professionals is one of the most important things we can do for our nation,“ said California State Chief Information Security Officer Mark Weatherford. “Cyberspace is the new frontier and the growing challenges of keeping our governments and businesses secure require competent technical cybersecurity specialists that take years to develop.“

California is looking to become a leader in producing skilled cyber professionals for the future.

“California is taking a lead role in this important initiative to advance the skills and expertise of young people to ultimately boost the fight against cyber threats,“ said State Chief Information Officer Teri Takai. “The 2010 Cyber Security Treasure Hunt is a creative approach to harnessing the energy and curiosity of students in a meaningful way that engages tomorrow“™s security professionals.“

USCC is currently hoping to find 10,000 young people that can be trained and developed into the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.
