A group of Turkish miscreants have submitted fake translations to Facebook so that an error message would appear reading “Your message could not be sent because of your tiny penis” in Turkish. The intended message should actually read “the message could not be delivered because the intended recipient was offline.”
The Turkish users were able to take advantage of Facebook’s crowd-sourcing technology used in translations to vote for the incorrect translation. The miscreants were also able to change the translation of “like” to a curse word.
A security consultant with Trend Micro, Rick Ferguson, says Facebook has fixed the faulty translations.
“Perhaps it is fortunate that the hole has been exposed through a prank in the first instance and not something more nefarious,” he said. “Any online service, whether it's translation or reputation services, which solicits user generated content would be well advised to quality check that content before going live with it.”
