The German government has advised its ministers to avoid using smartphones like Blackberry and iPhones because of “a dramatic increase of attacks against“ the government’s networks.

Additionally, a ban on the use of smartphones in several government ministries is also under consideration, Federal Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière told Handesblatt. Instead, senior civil servants and ministers are being advised to use Simko2 gadgets offered by T-Systems, after advice from the federal office for information security.

The German government has expressed concern, somewhat similar to recent concern in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, because data from Blackberrys go through Research in Motion centers in Canada and the United Kingdom. The Interior Minister also said there is a risk of “political IT attacks“ coming from foreign intelligence agencies and criminals.

“The BlackBerry infrastructure is a closed proprietary system,” he said. “[But] the access standard to our networks must be determined by the government and not by a private company.”
