India, which recently joined the UAE and Saudi Arabia in demanding the ability to read encrypted Blackberry communications, has issued a notice to mobile phone operators in the country that they must possess equipment to monitor Blackberry communications by the end of August.

Tata Teleservices, a large India mobile phone provider, told the BBC the letter told the company it needs to “ensure that Legal Intervention (LI) capability is put in place.”

“As a Tata Group company, we have always abided by the law of the land and will do so here too,” according to a Tata spokesperson.

The Indian government has threatened to shut down Blackberry service if access to the encrypted messages is not given, according to the BBC.The Blackberry service provider RIM has issued assurances to its customers that the company is working with local governments to find a solution.

“RIM assures its customers that it genuinely tries to be as co-operative as possible with governments in the spirit of supporting legal and national security requirements, while also preserving the lawful needs of citizens and corporations,” a statement by RIM said.
