Retired Army Lt. Gen. and President of ITT Defense and Information Solutions David Melcher penned a posting for the Huffington Post recently about the “new political reality setting in over Washington.“

“For the foreseeable future, budgets at all levels of government are going to be under increased scrutiny,“ he writes.

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates' round of efficiency initiatives at the Pentagon are just the beginning.

The businesses that are succeeding in this new reality where innovation isn't sacrificed even though the fat is trimmed, are the companies “that are rethinking how they do business.“

“Proposing and designing expensive new systems may no longer be a realistic approach,“ he writes. “Instead, providing advancement and affordable new directions for proven technologies will be the key to success.“

ITT is helping to steer toward those new directions, Melcher says.

“ITT Defense’s technologies for land, air, sea, and space provide greater situational awareness and capability in more affordable ways. These networked technologies more efficiently collect, process and disseminate voice, data and imagery in real-time across secure networks to commanders, analysts, and to the warfighter on the battlefield.“
