Siemens Velaro Train's Next Stop: America?

Siemens is hoping to find new markets for its high-speed Velaro trains in Florida, Ohio and California, according to CEO Eric Spiegel.

Siemens' “Future of Florida High-Speed Rail Tour” exhibition kicked off this week in Tampa, with future stops in Orlando, Miami and Tallahassee. The exhibit features a full-size model of the train and high-speed rail experts to answer questions.

Current law stipulates that high-speed rail will come to Florida in 2015, with $1.25 billion of support coming from the national stimulus plan. Thirty one other states, as well as the District of Columbia, have also received funding for high-speed rail. Despite this, there is some rail plans may change as a result of the governor and midterm elections.

The Velaro currently operates at high-speeds in Germany, Spain, China, Russia, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria. The trains can travel more than 200 miles per hour, depending on the capacity of the tracks.
