Dutch Teen Arrested for Pro-WikiLeaks DDoS Attacks

Police in the Netherlands on Saturday arrested a 19-year-old accused of cyber attacking the website of the public prosecution office as part of a bigger effort to support WikiLeaks, according to Reuters.

Naked Security reported the DDoS attack on the prosecution website followed the Dutch police’s arrest of a 16-year-old in connection with cyber attacks launched against several websites, including PayPal and MasterCard.

The 19-year-old, who used the nickname Aweinee, is suspected of using hacking software to launch attacks that slowed the prosecutor’s website down for hours and made it unavailable to visitors. The suspect also allegedly urged others to participate in the attack.

Involvement in DDoS attacks carries a maximum prison sentence of six years in the Netherlands, Reuters said.

The teen is also accused of taking part in an attack on Moneybookers.com, an online payment service that recently terminated its relationship with WikiLeaks.
