Executive Spotlight: Glen Berger of DRS Tech - top government contractors - best government contracting event
Glen Berger

Glen Berger, VP of finance for DRS Tech, sat down with GovCon Executive to discuss how to deal with uncertainty in the defense market, the company’s edge in the market, and his personal goals:

GovCon Executive:  Can you tell us a little about your background and how you got involved in DRS Technical Services?

Glen Berger: I“™ve held a variety of management jobs prior to this position at DRS Technical Services. I“™ve been here over three years now as the VP of business operations. Prior to this position, I worked in financial management positions at General Dynamics, Titan/L3 Corporation and Cubic Corporation. I attended the University of Maryland and am a CPA.  After graduation from college, I spent five years in the U.S. Marine Corps where I learned a great deal about leadership. DRS Technical Services is an exciting company to work for: We provide a variety of services primarily to DoD customers.  Our offerings include secure and unsecure voice, data, and video infrastructure to deployed users in austere and hostile environments, broad HF, UHF, VHF, microwave, wireless and SATCOM communications installation and operation, satellite terminal integration and installation, security system integration and installation for military reservations, and a host of other communications solutions, often to users in hostile environments.

GovCon Executive:  What about your role as vice president of finance, what are your biggest challenges and rewards in your role?

Glen Berger:  The defense market is dealing with a degree of uncertainty right now, the war effort is winding down, and there is a lot of discussion about the defense budgets being scaled back. At DRS Technical Services, we are trying to balance cost control and growth, so we can continue our top-line growth, and also position ourselves so we are lean enough to bid on work as it becomes more competitive. This area is probably where I spend most of my time, and like all senior finance managers, I find cash management is always at the top of my list.

GovCon Executive:  Do you have any specific goals for the firm in the next six months to a year?

Glen Berger: Continue to provide our customers with quality services performed by highly qualified staff ““ we need to make sure we are always striving to exceed our customers“™ expectations.  On the financial side, I am targeting indirect rates that I believe will make our pricing more competitive.

GovCon Executive:  In terms of the company itself, what advantages does DRS Tech have in the market over its competitors?

Glen Berger:  In the services area, we are dealing with people – that“™s our product, so obviously having the highest-qualified employees is critical. We demonstrate that through past performance, so the quality of our staff really differentiates us to our customer.  Our goal is to develop loyal, satisfied customers who will come back to us the next time around.

GovCon Executive:  Outside of work, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?

Glen Berger:  Exercise. I go to the gym every day to do cardio and some weight training. The best time for me is to go really early in the morning. I also golf once in a while.
