Tanzania has acknowledged cybersecurity remains a major challenge to its communications industry and to national interests, according to professor John S. Nkoma, the director general of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority.

Nkoma highlighted the issue of cybersecurity during a briefing to the newly appointed Minister for Communication, Science and Technology professor Makame Mbarawa during a tour of TCRA headquarters in Dar es Salaam last week, according to East African Business Week.

The director general commented on questions raised on some unfulfilled promises of the recent registration of cell phones, which continue to be misused by criminals.

Similarly, there is a problem in ensuring web security due to rapid developments of computer technology. Nkoma told The East African Business Week a number of loose ends need to be tied up in the cyber industry by the government, the providers and the state security organs.

“As far as Internet advancement technology is concerned, cybersecurity will remain a major challenge not only to us in Tanzania, but regionally,” he said. “There is therefore need for joint efforts from all stakeholders within and outside Tanzania.”
