Foreign Cyber Crooks Attack Irish Businesses

Cyber crooks are extorting thousands of euro from Irish businesses by attacking and hijacking their computer systems and websites, the Irish Examiner reports.

The Computer Crime Investigation Unit said foreign gangs, sometimes in cahoots with Irish criminals, are flying in hackers from other countries to target Irish companies. Detective Inspector Paul Gillen said a “major problem” for law enforcement will be criminals' ability to avoid having to possess criminal evidence by storing their data remotely on a server in another country.

“We have seen the transition in hackers doing stuff for fun or credibility, such as defacing a website, to where it is revenue generating,” Gillen told the Irish Examiner. “Hackers are being hired by organized crime gangs to generate money.”

According to the newspaper, The Computer Crime Investigation Unit is investigating cyber crime such as denial-of-service attacks, ransomware and malware.
