A South African website featuring news, politics, arts and culture, and sports has been temporarily shut down following a severe attack by hackers, according to Times Live.
Online editor Chris Roper said in statement the Mail & Guardian website had been taken down so it could be secured and repaired, a decision he called “painful.”
“We cannot, however, risk compromising [readers’] security,” he said.
A technical team has been assigned to try restore the site as soon as possible.
“We’d like to extend sincere apologies to all of our users, and hope that they will understand that we had to prioritize their security over other considerations for a brief period,” M&G Editor-in-Chief Nic Dawes said.
