Filipino politician and Chair of the Congressional Commission on Science Technology and Engineering Edgardo Angara has pledged to pass an anti-cyber crime law, which the Philippines currently does not have, ABS-CBN News reported.

Angara’s committee today held a hearing on several anti-cyber crime measures pending in the Senate, including three cyber crime prevention acts, an anti-spyware act, and an anti-phishing act.

The legislation is badly needed, Angara said, in a nation where Internet users account for 30 percent of the population, many of whom are vulnerable to online crime.

One of the features of an anti-cyber crime law, the senator said, is the purchase of equipment that would grant authorities to ability to track down cyber crooks criminals within 24 hours.

During the hearing, some officials of the National Bureau of Investigation proposed laptops be registered with the government for easier monitoring. However, Sen. Francis Escudero, chair of the Justice and Human Rights Committee, sees no need for it and said it would only invade a person’s privacy.
