A new report has concluded Australia is increasingly unprepared to handle cyber attacks on the country’s energy, water, transport and communications systems, and the threat is poorly understood by politicians, business people and the general public.

The “Optimising Australia’s Response to the Cyber Challenge” report by security think tank Kokoda Foundation argues cybersecurity has become Australia’s “fundamental weakness.”

“[Australia is] not keeping pace with the growing threat,” the report said, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Written by former a Deputy Chief of the Air Force John Blackburn and strategic consultant Gary Waters, the report says Australia has reached a point where the current trajectory of cyber responses is being rapidly outpaced by the evolving threat.

While there has been progress made in adopting the government's 2009 Cyber Security Strategy, Australia is not keeping pace with the growing threat and, as a result, its collective and individual security is being placed at risk, the report said.

To remedy some of the problems, the report recommends assigning a lead to coordinate cybersecurity issues across government and appointing a minister with oversight responsibility for cyber issues. It also suggests developing a 10-year plan to manage cyber issues and disconnecting the power grid and any control system transporting people, managing gas or petrol production or controlling the flow of water from the wider Internet.
