Microsoft Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. announced this week plans to form a partnership to create a global platform for Toyota’s telematics services based on Window’s Azure platform.
Telematics combines telecommunications and IT technologies in vehicles. It includes GPS, energy management and multimedia capabilities.
“Today’s announcement of our partnership with TMC is a great example of how we continue to invest in the automotive industry and of our commitment to power the services that are important to consumers,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “It further validates the power of the cloud, as the Windows Azure platform will provide the enterprise-grade, scalable platform that TMC needs to deliver telematics in its automobiles worldwide.”
The partnership funds Toyota Media Service Company, a subsidiary of Toyota that offers customers digital information services, with $12 million. The media service will offer the developed telematics platforms on Toyota electric and hybrid vehicles beginning in 2012.
Toyota hopes to establish a telematic service global cloud platform by 2015. The service is an extension of Toyota’s smart-grid program.
