Amid concerns and the likelihood of a government shutdown, Homeland Security officials told Nextgov those who perform cybersecurity functions will not be furloughed if the shutdown happens. The lack of a budget deal by midnight tonight increases the chances of a government shutdown and would affect government agencies nationwide.

With the clock ticking closer to midnight, federal departments are determining which job functions are essential in a shutdown. Employees at DHS are to remain at their job posts due to a law that exempts staffers who perform duties “necessary for the safety of human life and protection of property.“

With debate of whether the department has enough employees during a shutdown, McAfee Director of Federal Business Development Tom Conway spoke to Nextgov and said he hopes DHS“™ cybersecurity personnel, including contractors, have been deemed essential and thus somewhat shielded from the impact of a shutdown.

“In any case, McAfee“™s federal team continues to be available 24-7 to help agencies navigate through these uncertain times,“ he said.
