Hackers have compromised official websites of 16 federal offices in Nepal this month alone, raising questions about the security of web servers used by the government, Republica reports.

The main reason for the spike in cyber attacks was lack of law enforcement, said Vice President of High Level Commission of Information Technology Manohar Kumar Bhattarai.

“We have to accept weaknesses in Internet security and lack of awareness,“ he said, adding that many are still in the dark about hacking being considered a punishable offense.

This past weekend marked the fourth time the official website of the Nepalese government was hacked. And agencies that  experienced the same kind of attack in May include the Public Procurement Monitoring Office, the Judicial Council and the District Education Office, Myagdi, among others.

Some of these websites are still being controlled by the hackers, an unnamed source said, and named culprits such as Ashiyane, Team MOSTA, MMA and V4 team.

The High Level Commission of Information Technology is tasked with performing website security audit of federal offices, “however, repeated hacking of government websites suggests that their security audit have not been conducted so far,” an official said.
