Despite increasing pressure to slash Pentagon spending, the top strategist for Boeing’s defense operations sees potentially steady growth opportunities in both cybersecurity and new unmanned aircraft programs, The Wall Street Journal reports.

In a news briefing at the Paris Air Show, Chris Raymond, vice president of business development and strategy for Boeing’s Defense Space & Security unit, mentioned those areas as possible silver linings in the otherwise somewhat glum forecast for Pentagon acquisition budgets.

Cybersecurity and so-called unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, could offer the best chances for the company to nab substantial new U.S. orders amid continuing uncertainty about Pentagon spending plans over the next few years, Raymond said.

In discussing cybersecurity, Raymond stressed that “we do see it as a growth area,” and that Boeing expects Defense Department contractors to soon possibly face “greater requirements and expectations” related to the cybersecurity of aircraft and even subsystems they sell to the Pentagon.

In the near term, Boeing’s strategy will include building its capabilities to focus on helping U.S. intelligence customers with “information sharing and information assurance,” Raymond said. However, he predicted, eventually Boeing will consider how far it can expand its cyber expertise “in terms of other customers, both federal, and maybe someday, commercial entities.”
