The Committee on Science, Space, and Technology unanimously approved a bill yesterday that enhances cybersecurity efforts across federal agencies.
The Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2011, introduced by Congressmen Michael McCaul and Dan Lipinski, primarily addresses efforts at the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Standards and Technology and will now advance to a vote on the House floor.
“By strengthening agency coordination and cooperation on cybersecurity research and development efforts, this bill will help address the comprehensive cybersecurity needs of the nation,“ said Ralph Hall, committee chairman. “This is a good bill, and it represents an important step in Congress“™s overall efforts to address cybersecurity issues.“
The bill contains legislation that would strengthen security activities around federal networks, initiate research and development, implement a cyber workforce and encourage collaboration between the public and private sectors.
“Today“™s hackers are no longer thrill-seeking teenagers,“ McCaul said. “They are organized crime syndicates and national militaries that commit espionage.”
