Small-business owners launching new companies may want to start in the cloud, which could decrease startup costs and allow them to focus on generating revenue, says an industry cloud expert.

Ivanka Menken, CEO of Australia-based IT education company The Art of Service, said cloud computing has eliminated the need for a large lump-sum investment to start a new business as entrepreneurs now can “rent” business equipment and IT services on an as-needed basis without paying anything upfront.

Instead of using exchange servers for email and calendar sharing, providers such as Google provide startups with corporate-looking email systems and fully integrated calendar sharing for a much lower cost, Menken said, which helps lower the dependence on startup capital and gives business owners more freedom to focus on generating revenue.

Menken suggested it might be less costly for a startup to use cloud-based solutions from the beginning, rather than switching to them later. Data transfers and already-purchased, but obsolete, in-house equipment can increase costs and become problems for business oweners, who also have to go through the process of “unlearning” the way they used to work with the old systems as cloud offerings may be less flexible and customized.
