Personal information belonging to 34,000 investment clients of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney has been possibly stolen in  transit to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, according to Bloomberg.

The brokerage firm notified clients about the breach last month, said Jim Wiggins, a spokesman for New York-based Morgan Stanley. The lost information was stored on two password-protected CDs, which were not encrypted, and contained account numbers and Social Security numbers, as well as interest earned on tax-exempt bonds and funds, he said.

There is no evidence of criminal intent or misuse of the information, Wiggins told Bloomberg.

“We were informed that the package appeared to be intact when it was received at the department, but when it was delivered internally to the intended recipient, the CDs were not there,“ he said.

Morgan Stanley is now exploring with New York State how to bolster the security of similar types of data transmission, he said.
