Randy Vickers, director of the United States Computer Emergency Response Team, unexpectedly resigned from his position Friday following a recent spike in the number of cyber attacks against government agencies and private contractors.
According to an email sent to employees by Roberta Stempfley, acting assistant secretary for cyber security and communications at the Department of Homeland Security, Vickers resigned July 22, effective immediately. The email did not include a reason for the resignation.
Until a new director for the agency is named, Lee Rock, deputy director, will serve in the position.
Vickers served as director of US-CERT since 2009.
