Northrop to Provide GPS Support for Navy's CH-53K Helicopter - top government contractors - best government contracting eventNorthrop Grumman Corporation has secured a follow-on contract from the Naval Air Systems Command to help integrate the LN-251 GPS systems on the U.S. Navy“™s new CH-53K Super Stallion helicopter.

According to Northrop, the LN-251 system is run by a fiber-optic gyro-based measurement unit and is classified as the world“™s lightest and most compact GPS/fiber-optic internal navigation system in its class.

The unit works by using three independent navigation solutions: blended INS/GPS, INS-only, and GPS only, which makes it extremely accurate, according to the company. Northrop is expected to install it on the CH-53K, a new heavy-lift helicopter designed for the U.S. Marine Corps.

“The LN-251 is ideally suited to meet the precise navigation needs of the robust CH-53K helicopter because it is lightweight, highly compact and reliable,” said Gorik Hossepian, vice president of navigation and positioning systems for Northrop Grumman’s navigation systems division.
