Rockwell, NASA to Develop Unmanned Aircraft Control System for Safer Flights - top government contractors - best government contracting eventRockwell Collins will be working with NASA to develop a control system to enable unmanned aircraft to safely fly in the national airspace system, the company announced Monday.

Under the three-year partnership formed through NASA“™s unmanned aircraft system communications research sub-project, the team will work to define the waveform for a non-payload communications data link used to control the aircraft.

If successful, Rockwell says the development will help the Federal Aviation Administration adopt an appropriate set of rules and guidelines for UAS flight in the national airspace system, since previous rules and certification standards were written with the intent of having a pilot aboard the aircraft.

In early October, 2011, NASA distributed nearly $12.6 million in contracts with six firms and four university cooperative agreements to assist in incorporating UAS into the national air space system, according to the agency“™s website.
