Los Alamos Lab Uses Quantum Physics for Mobile Security


Through quantum cryptography, researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory researchers have invented a new system to secure large transfers of information between mobile devices.

LANL recently released information about the QKarD, a miniature transmitter which generates random cryptographic keys to encode and decode information.

LANL says the QKarD uses the laws of quantum physics and information theory when encrypting information, which offers superior security through lower computational requirements. As a result, the information it encrypts is virtually impossible to crack.

Once encoded, the information can only be retrieved by using an authenticated password. The password can be obtained through biometric readings.

Besides guaranteed security, QKarD differs from traditional methods because it minimizes information so it can be loaded onto smartcards and smart phones. LANL believes QKarD could replace traditional security systems, saying it is simpler and less expensive.
