The Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded Raytheon a $10 million contract to provide research and development for a pulse powered system using electromagnetic energy, Raytheon announced Monday.

According to the Defense Technical Information Center, pulse forming networks provide energy pulses to accommodate gun and armor loads and are envisioned for hybrid-electric combat vehicles.

Raytheon said its research is part of a larger effort by the Navy to develop weapon systems for naval warships. Raytheon said the system may be used in the future to power lasers, railguns or radars.
