The Defense Information Systems Agency expects to issue security guidelines in August covering both Google‘s Android operating system and Apple‘s iOS, a lead DISA official told NextGov.
Mark Orndorff, DISA’s program executive officer for mission assurance network operations, said the guidelines will address security concerns that currently bar the use of commercial devices on the Pentagon’s networks.
Orndorff also told NextGov security concerns would be resolved within six months.
Orndorff said DISA is working with Apple to address the agency’s concerns with Apple’s operating system but he did not name most of the issues due to confidentiality agreements.
The National Institutes of Standards and Technology has not certified Apple’s iOS as compliant with federal encryption standards.
Orndorff said DISA developed one workaround for Apple devices by using GoodReader software, which encrypts files on iPads and iPhones to secure data in case a device is lost or stolen.
