Northrop Grumman Corp. has received Air Force approval to start full rate production of an infrared missile warning system, the company announced Monday.
The Air Force will use the NexGen system on the C-17, EC-130J, HC/MC-130J and other platforms for the Mobile Air Force airlift and special operations fleets.
Northrop-produced infrared countermeasure systems are installed on 50 different types of large fixed-wing transports and rotary-wing platforms, the company said.
Countering shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles is one area the Air Force will address with the system, said Air Force Col. Shawn Shanley, the Air Force’s senior material leader for the large infrared countermeasures program.
NexGen will replace the Air Force’s current ultraviolet missile warning system.
