Harris To Provide Wi-Fi At VA Hospitals - top government contractors - best government contracting eventHarris Corp. has won a $19.4 million task order to install Wi-Fi systems at hospitals run by the Department of Veterans Affairs, NextGov reports.

The Melbourne, Fla.-based communications and contracting firm will install Wi-Fi and real-time tracking systems at 26 sites.

Nearly 111 VA facilities do not have Wi-Fi that supports real-time tracking equipment and personnel, according to NextGov.

Harris will provide post-installation services, design services and equipment at four unnamed sites.

Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and North and South Dakota are planned locations for an initial Wi-Fi rollout, according to NextGov.

The company is also contracted to develop a joint electronic health records system for the VA and the Defense Department.

In October 2008, the VA awarded a contract to Catapult Technology for Wi-Fi installation at 236 hospitals and clinics.

However, officials said that thick concrete walls in older hospitals prevented the transmission of wireless signals and that more access points were needed.
