The defense secretary’s office has issued a solicitation for a new system to navigate unmanned aerial vehicles through commercial airspace, Nextgov reports.

Such a system would be designed to help prevent in-flight collisions or complications with man-controlled aircraft, according to the report.

Proposals are due Aug. 31 and presentations will occur in November at Mitre’s McLean, Va. office.

The Defense Department has also assembled a group to gauge the engineering community’s interest in helping integrate drones into public airspace.

A panel of department engineers are reviewing proposals for system prototypes, according to Nextgov.

Drones are only allowed to fly in restricted airspace controlled by the military.

The FAA has until Sept. 30, 2015 to integrate drones into public airspace under current legislation.
