The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency wants industry to develop technologies with the goal of improving mobility of robots, Information Week reports.
According to Patience Wait’s report, DARPA wants to increase power transmission efficiency of robots by up to 2,000 percent.
Currently, robots are about two orders of magnitude less efficient than humans and animals in using energy to produce motion, Wait reports.
DARPA’s request coincides with its Maximum Mobility and Manipulation program, for developing tools to address performance, fabrication, mobility and manipulation.
Interested vendors will present their ideas at DARPA’s Robotics Challenge in December 2013.
