Law enforcement agencies nationwide will receive free software and equipment within the coming weeks to access the FBI’s database of mug shots, Nextgov reports.
The bureau has nearly 12 million mug shots of unidentified people in its system and plans to use facial recognition software to identify people of interest in candid photos and illegal immigrants, Aliya Sternstein reports.
Thomas E. Bush III, assistant director of the FBI“™s criminal justice information services division between 2005 and 2009, said the bureau has previously given local agencies universal latent workstations for palm prints, according to the report.
ULW software accepts scanned images, photos from digital cameras or pictures saved as digital files, Sternstein reports.
The FBI is testing its new database, the Next-Generation Identification system, to let state agencies upload pictures, the report said.
Lockheed Martin and an industry partner are working on a rapid DNA analysis platform for federal agencies.
