Former White House cybersecurity chief Howard Schmidt said President Barack Obama should issue an executive order on securing computer networks as soon as possible, National Journal reports.

That order, Schmidt said, should call for increased information sharing between the public and private sector and ensure agencies follow cybersecurity standards for procurement and contracting.

According to Josh Smith’s report, Schmidt also said claims of a future “cyber 9/11” or a “digital Pearl Harbor” fail to give proper perspective to cyber threats and prevents moderated conversation on the topic.

Schmidt added that an executive order would update the government network security systems and the next president should have the risks of cyber attacks substantiated.

In August, Sen. John Rockerfeller also asked Obama to issue an executive order to protect the nation’s cyber infrastructure.
