Janet Napolitano: 'Highest Levels' Reviewing WH Cyber Order - top government contractors - best government contracting event

Executives at the highest levels of government are reviewing a draft White House executive order on cybersecurity, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Wednesday, according to National Journal.

That order is close to completion, she said, adding some issues may still need to be worked out and President Barack Obama has not yet reviewed it.

Josh Smith reports she made the remarks at a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing.

An executive order would establish a system of voluntary standards to be followed by companies that operate infrastructure systems such as chemical plants or power grids, Smith reports.

Even with the order, Napolitano said Congress needs to enact legislation she believes would relieve DHS of limitations on hiring of cybersecurity experts; give companies more liability protections; and increase criminal penalties for cybercrimes.

Congress failed to pass a cyber bill this year, including one proposed by Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman.
