The contract, which has a four-year and six months performance period, was awarded to the Cedar Rapids, IA-based contractor as part of DARPA's High-Assurance Cyber Military Systems program.

Rockwell Collins said it will create cyber security solutions for UAVs which will also feature compatibility with other network-enabled military vehicles.

John Borghese, VP of Rockwell Collins' Advanced Technology Center, said that the company’s experience in the security certification of complex systems and the use of formal methods helped Rockwell Collins acquire the contract.

He also stressed the importance of designing the software correctly the first time, in order to keep military computing platforms secure.

These formal methods are the application of rigorous mathematical reasoning and advanced analysis tools to prove relevant properties about a system, according to Rockwell Collins.

The Rockwell Collins team is made up of of Boeing, Galois, National ICT Australia (NICTA), and the University of Minnesota.
