Thompson was formerly chairman and CEO of international gold producer Gold Fields Ltd., which has nearly 50,000 employees and operations on five continents.

Thomson was also the founder and CEO of Castle Group Ltd., an international investment company that helped support development of new mines.
He was also Chairman of the World Gold Council from 2002 to 2005, where Jacobs said he advocated for the listing of gold electronic transfer funds on the New York Stock Exchange, London Stock Exchange and other exchanges.
Thompson currently serves as a director on the boards of two Canadian mining companies and a privately-held biotechnology company based in the U.S.
