Report: Qualcomm Making 4G Walkie Talkie Tech for Public Safety - top government contractors - best government contracting eventQualcomm Inc. is developing 4G walkie-talkie technology for first responders that operate even if a radio network goes down, Light Reading reports.

According to Dan Jones’ story, this work is part of a larger project to build a nationwide Long Term Evolution network in the 700MHz D-Block spectrum for first responders.

Goals of Qualcomm’s project include reducing the number of radios needed by emergency services and providing workers ability to communicate with each other across a 4G network, the report said.

Jones reports Emil Olbrich, lead project engineer for the office of law enforcement standards at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, told attendees at a Chicago conference the radios would function like walkie-talkies if the 4G network goes down.
