AT&T‘s government solutions business has won a contract from the U.S. Marine Corps to develop mobile devices for deployment in the Defense Department, the company said Wednesday.

AT&T and its team of partners such as Green Hills Software, SafeNet and Sequitur Labs will develop 450 prototype mobile devices for testing, certification and implementation under the Marine Corps’ Trusted Handheld Platform.

The goal of the program is to provide devices to not only the Pentagon, but other government agencies and the general public.

“Our Trusted Handheld solution marries the ingenuity of commercial mobile devices with end-to-end AT&T security capabilities to meet the advanced communication needs of our customers,” said Thomas Harvey, president of the government solutions business.

“This relationship is a great example of private sector innovation coming together to provide strategic advantages for government,” said Ed Amoroso, senior vice president and chief security officer at AT&T. “The technology behind our security solutions originated with the AT&T Security Research Center, where a specialized team is continuously working to ensure the secure future of mobility.”

Mobile devices developed under the program will send and receive voice, video and data across security domains and wireless networks in both domestic and international location.

Initially, the devices will run a modified version of the Android mobile operating system but AT&T said they could support multiple operating systems and device platforms in the future.
